Old autochrome of Sainte-Cécile Cathedral and the Palais de la Berbie, home of the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, in Albi

The venue

A museum holding more than a thousand works by Toulouse-Lautrec, next to the brick cathedral of Sainte-Cécile. Born in Albi, the painter is presented in the Palais de la Berbie, a 13th-century fortress and former bishops’ residence, where the museum opened in 1922 thanks to a donation from his family.

The collections include paintings, lithographs, drawings and posters by the artist. Close by, the Cathedral of Sainte-Cécile, built from 1282 to 1480, is striking for the contrast between its fortress-like exterior and the richness of its interior decoration, in the Southern Gothic style. Together with the Episcopal City of Albi, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For groups : The Musée Toulouse-Lautrec welcomes adult groups all year round, with a group rate from 10 paying people and free admission for the guide or group leader. For self-guided visits there is no size limit, and a free audio guide is available on smartphones in seven languages. For guided visits, groups are limited to 30 people, including the driver and accompanying adults, and must bring their own guide holding a professional card, as the museum has no in-house guides; larger groups split into two with two guides. Allow 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, and book at least two weeks in advance.
