The venue
An interpretation centre devoted to the Battle of Alesia, in which Julius Caesar’s army faced Vercingetorix’s Gallic coalition in 52 BC. Located in Alise-Sainte-Reine, in the Côte-d’Or, it occupies a circular building designed by Bernard Tschumi, clad in a wooden lattice that evokes the fortifications.
Since 2021, the exhibition has presented the occupation of the site over the long term, with more than 600 original objects. Outside, around a hundred metres of the Roman fortifications have been reconstructed full-size, with towers, ditches, a palisade, traps and siege weapons. The roof terrace offers a view over the plain and Mont Auxois.
For groups : Booking is compulsory for all group visits, and the group rate applies from 10 people, to be requested no later than 72 hours before the visit. The guides offer guided tours of the museum or the Gallo-Roman town (1 h 30), 2-hour routes in the footsteps of Caesar or Vercingetorix, oil-lamp or mosaic workshops, the « Dans la légion » activity (35 participants maximum, from April to October) and a day-long hike between the two camps. Parking is free, and the 3 km journey between the museum and the Gallo-Roman town is made by coach. The restaurant « La table de Victor » welcomes groups by reservation; the museum is accessible, the Gallo-Roman town partially.
