The venue
Europe’s largest aquarium, dedicated to the ocean and its biodiversity. Opened in 1991 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, between the beach and the harbour, Nausicaá, the French national sea centre, is a centre for discovering the marine environment. Its “Journey to the High Seas” exhibition, opened in 2018, is built around a 10,000 m³ tank recreating the ecosystem of Malpelo Island.
The visit also includes the historic exhibition “Shores and People” and, since 2020, “In the Eye of the Climate”, devoted to protecting the oceans. In 2020, its aquariums, terrariums and screening rooms presented some 58,000 marine animals from all over the world. Nausicaá is also Europe’s largest coral breeding centre.
For groups : Groups are welcome from 20 people, and there are options for mini-groups of 10 to 19 people; bookings must be made at least three working days in advance. A self-guided visit takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, a guided tour 1 hour 30, and a behind-the-scenes tour or an audio guide can be added. Coach parking is free on presentation of the booking number, the driver enters free of charge and one free place is granted for every 20 paid admissions. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks can be booked, and lifts give access to the whole exhibition.
