The venue

The largest Gothic palace in Europe, residence of the popes in the 14th century. Both fortress and palace, the Palais des Papes in Avignon was then the seat of Western Christendom, and six conclaves were held there. It combines two buildings: the Old Palace of Benedict XII, set on the Rocher des Doms, and the New Palace of Clement VI.

It is the work of the architects Pierre Poisson and Jean de Louvres and of the Sienese fresco painters Simone Martini and Matteo Giovanetti. Listed as a historic monument as early as 1840, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, together with the historic centre of Avignon and the Saint-Bénézet bridge. It is one of the most visited monuments in France.

For groups : Avignon Tourisme's group service books guided tours of the palace, group admission tickets and speaking rights for outside guides, and can arrange a tailor-made day or stay in Avignon and Provence. On self-guided visits, every visitor receives a free Histopad, an augmented reality tablet available in seven languages. The palace is open every day, all year round.
