The venue
A mountain reserve where ibex, marmots and chamois live in semi-freedom, facing Mont Blanc. Created in 1967-1968, the Parc animalier de Merlet occupies a former alpine pasture hamlet at an altitude of 1,550 metres, above Les Houches and Chamonix, in the Aiguilles Rouges massif.
It is dedicated to Alpine wildlife: ibex, chamois, mouflons, fallow deer, sika deer, marmots and llamas roam its 21 hectares and can easily be approached. Visitors stay on the paths and keep a few metres away so as not to disturb the animals. Activities and exhibitions are offered during the opening season.
For groups : Groups are welcome from May to September, with booking essential, in the morning or the afternoon. A half-day should be allowed: 1 h 30 to 2 h of self-guided visit along a trail marked with information panels, plus about twenty minutes' walk from the coach car park. Coaches park in car park 3, the only one where they can turn around, and are not allowed in the afternoon in July or all day in August. Picnics are taken outside the park, and 30-minute activities can be booked as an option.
