The venue
A forested massif designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Created in 1975, the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park brings together 111 municipalities in the Bas-Rhin and Moselle, and its headquarters are in the château of La Petite-Pierre. It is part of the Northern Vosges-Pfälzerwald transboundary biosphere reserve.
Forest covers about 65% of the area, with beech, oak and pine woods on sandstone. The park has 35 castles built on sandstone spurs, many museums devoted to history and craftsmanship, such as the Meisenthal Glass Museum, and a built heritage of half-timbering and pink sandstone. Some 2,600 km of marked trails can be explored on foot, on horseback or by bike.
