The venue
The highest known aqueduct bridge of the Roman world, with a site and a discovery museum. Probably built in the first half of the 1st century, the Pont du Gard spans the Gardon at Vers-Pont-du-Gard. It carried the aqueduct, more than 50 km long, that brought water from Uzès to Nîmes.
The structure stacks three levels of arches: 6 on the lower level, 11 on the middle level and 35 on the upper level. It ranks among the most monumental examples of Roman engineering: over its entire course, the aqueduct drops only 12.6 metres. Listed as a historic monument as early as 1840, the Pont du Gard has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
For groups : Groups of 20 or more must book their visit; the self-guided visit includes the discovery areas (museum, cinema) and access to the first level of the bridge, parking included. Guided tours of one hour to 1 hour 30 minutes lead to the top of the aqueduct, subject to authorisation, and a guided walk at the foot of the bridge takes place on flat ground accessible to all. Groups can have lunch at Les Terrasses restaurant, facing the monument, order a picnic basket or book a Roman wine tasting, for 20 to 30 people.
