The ramparts of Aigues-Mortes above the marshes

The venue

A fully enclosed fortified medieval city, once the royal port of Saint Louis. Louis IX acquired the site between 1240 and 1248 and set sail from here in 1248 on the Seventh Crusade. The Tour de Constance was built to protect the new town and its port.

The ramparts, built from the late 13th century onwards, are 1,640 m long and 11 m high. The quadrangular enclosure, flanked by fifteen towers and pierced by ten gates, is exceptionally well preserved. Together with the Tour de Constance, it bears witness to military architecture in a marshland setting. The ramparts have been a listed historic monument since 1903.

For groups : Groups of 20 or more paying adults receive a group rate for a self-guided visit of the Tour de Constance and the ramparts. A guided lecture tour is offered for a maximum of 30 people, or fewer depending on the chosen theme. Tourism professionals can buy tickets in advance through a dedicated ticketing platform, which gives priority access.
