The venue
A sacred city clinging to the cliff, a pilgrimage sanctuary since the Middle Ages. In the heart of Haut-Quercy, in the north of the Lot department, it rises 150 metres above the deep Alzou valley. This Marian pilgrimage site has been renowned since the 12th century.
The medieval city, with its winding lanes, is guarded by a series of fortified gates. A monumental stairway, once climbed by pilgrims on their knees, leads to the esplanade of the sanctuaries, where visitors come to venerate the Black Virgin and the tomb of Saint Amadour. The village is listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.
For groups : Coaches may park only in the pay car parks of L’Hospitalet, Le Château and Le Garroustié. From the Château car park, a paying inclined lift, open part of the year, goes down towards the town, and the Rocamadour lift leads to the sanctuary; the gently sloping Way of the Cross offers an alternative. The sanctuary offers guided tours for groups, and the Vallée de la Dordogne tourist office, at L’Hospitalet, provides information on guided tours of the town.
