The venue
An iconic limestone cliff overlooking the Mâconnais vineyards. The Roche de Solutré towers over the village of Solutré-Pouilly, about 8 km west of Mâcon, and rises to 493 metres. A listed site and a Grand Site de France, it gave its name to the Solutrean, a Palaeolithic culture.
Humans have occupied the site for at least 55,000 years. Its summit is home to limestone grasslands with distinctive flora and fauna, and the rock is regarded as the birthplace of Pouilly-Fuissé, a renowned white wine. For a group, it is an outing that combines landscape, prehistory and the discovery of the vineyards.
For groups : Groups are welcome from 10 people, for a self-guided visit (about 1 h 30 for the prehistory museum and the archaeological and botanical park, with or without an audio guide) or for a one-hour guided tour of the museum with a guide, by reservation. Also by reservation, the « Escapade nature » offers the climb of the Roche with a local guide: 2 hours, about 1.5 km and 100 m of ascent, for 10 to 30 people. The museum holds the Tourisme & Handicap label, but the archaeological and botanical park is not accessible to people with reduced mobility; car parks P1 and P2 are about 200 m from the museum.
