The stained-glass windows of the upper chapel of the Sainte-Chapelle

The venue

A royal Gothic chapel famous for its 13th-century stained glass. Built on the Île de la Cité at the request of Saint Louis, it was intended to house the Crown of Thorns and other relics of the Passion acquired from 1239 onwards. Its construction took no more than seven years.

Designed as a vast, almost entirely glazed reliquary, the upper chapel is striking for its height and for the near absence of walls, replaced by immense original narrative stained-glass windows. The flamboyant rose window on the façade was added in the 15th century. An emblem of Rayonnant Gothic, restored in the 19th century, the Sainte-Chapelle is, with the Conciergerie, one of the remains of the Palais de la Cité.

For groups : Groups of 20 or more must book at least 20 days in advance, in particular through the Centre des monuments nationaux online ticket office for professionals. Groups can visit freely or with a guide on request, and a 1 hour 30 minute lecture tour is offered in French, English and Spanish. Tours in French and international sign language are available for groups. The upper chapel, reached by 33 steps, is not wheelchair accessible.
