The venue
Royal salt works designed by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. Built under Louis XV near the forest of Chaux, it processed brine brought from Salins-les-Bains through a 21 km brine pipeline. It operated until 1895.
The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. The visit takes in the great courtyard, the buildings arranged in a semicircle and the director’s house. At the entrance, the portico with Doric columns and its “grotto” evoke the depths of the earth from which salt is extracted. The site reflects both Enlightenment architecture and the industrial history of salt.
For groups : Groups of 20 to 50 people receive a group rate, with free admission for the driver and for one accompanying person per 20 adults. The visit can be made independently with the Histopad tablet or with a guide, on a theme of choice (history of salt, Ledoux’s architecture, gardens), in French, English or German, for a maximum of 50 people per group. The guided tour lasts 1 hour, or 2 hours for a two-tour package. On-site catering allows packages combining lunch and a visit, and parking is free.
