The venue
One of the best-preserved theatres of the Roman world, still used for performances. Built under the reign of Augustus, in the 1st century BC, the ancient theatre of Orange has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. It retains its original outer wall, 103 metres long and 37 metres high.
Louis XIV is said to have called it “the finest wall in my kingdom”. Its tiers could hold some 9,000 spectators, and the stage wall retains traces of its decoration. A glass and metal stage roof, added in 2006, protects the walls. Every summer, the theatre hosts the Chorégies d’Orange, a festival whose origins date back to 1869.
For groups : Groups of at least 20 people visit independently with an audio guide available in ten languages, with the driver and one escort entering free of charge; a two-hour tour with a guide-conférencier is also offered in French or English. Packages combine the theatre with the museum of art and history and the triumphal arch, and a meal can be arranged by reservation, with final numbers to be confirmed eight days before.
