The venue
A village perched on a rocky spur, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. In the heart of the Alpilles range, it sits at the start of a plateau rising 200 metres above the surrounding countryside.
The village is dominated by the Château des Baux, a vast fortress now in ruins, from which the view extends over the plains to the south, towards Arles and the Camargue. The upper village, where only about twenty people still live, has become above all a place to visit: it welcomes more than one and a half million visitors a year. In the surrounding area, former limestone quarries recall stone extraction dating back to Antiquity.
For groups : The tourist office's group service offers, from 20 people, a reduced rate for the château and tours with a guide-lecturer of the village, the château or both, in French, English or Spanish. A combined ticket covers the château and the Carrières des Lumières. Coach parking is charged at a flat rate, and a visit of the village takes at least an hour.
