The village of Sartène clinging to the hillside

The venue

A monument town nicknamed “the most Corsican of Corsican towns”, in the words of Prosper Mérimée. A sub-prefecture of Corse-du-Sud and the capital of the Sartenais, Sartène rises like an amphitheatre on the slopes of Monte Rosso and overlooks the Rizzanese valley with its tall grey granite houses.

Town life centres on Place Porta, overlooked by the former palace of the Genoese governors, now the town hall, and by the church of Sainte-Marie, where the cross and chain of the Catenacciu penitent are displayed. Passing under the town hall archway, you enter the old Manichedda quarter. A walk on foot reveals this granite heritage.
