The venue
Zoo presenting more than 1,000 animals in a historic wooded park. Founded in 1946 by the naturalist Jacques Bouillault on the Tertre-Rouge hill, south-east of La Flèche, in Sarthe, it was the first private zoo opened in France after the war. Today it reports 1,500 animals of 160 species over 18 hectares.
The park is involved in conservation programmes for endangered species. Its areas include a 4-hectare Asian plain, opened in 2017, home to Indian rhinoceroses, antelopes and axis deer. The zoo is also widely known thanks to the documentary series “Une saison au zoo”, broadcast on France 4 from 2014 to 2022.
For groups : The zoo offers group rates, and the driver receives free admission to the park and a complimentary hot drink. A themed guided tour is available all year by reservation, on weekdays excluding public holidays, from 20 people, as are a premium tour, a rally for ages 16 and over and the « Soigneur d'un jour » keeper experience in small groups of 5 or 8. For meals, options range from a table-service menu to a takeaway picnic or a buffet-style lunch reception.
