The venue
A municipal zoo right in the heart of the city. Opened in 1950 and owned by the City of Lille, the zoo lies in the Vauban-Esquermes district, at the foot of the citadel. It presents more than 350 animals of 77 species over 3.5 hectares.
The visit is organised into six themed areas, including « Terres d’Afrique », « Excursion sud-américaine », « D’île en île » and « Sous les tropiques », a large 750 m² walk-through aviary. A member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, the zoo takes part in European conservation programmes for endangered species.
For groups : Groups book their self-guided visit at least three weeks in advance, using a form sent to the reservation department. For classes from nursery to the last year of primary school and for leisure centres or associations, the zoo offers activities (stories, sensory tours, workshops), for up to 30 children per class and 24 per non-school group, as well as educational game booklets for self-guided visits. Picnics are not allowed inside the zoo, which has no shelter in case of rain.
