The venue
One of the largest private aquariums in Europe, facing the Old Port. At this location since 2001, the Aquarium La Rochelle presents more than 12,000 marine animals of 600 species in 3 million litres of seawater, half of it for the shark tank.
It grew out of the first closed-circuit seawater aquariums developed by René Coutant in the early 1950s. It describes itself as a centre for the study and preservation of marine species and houses a care centre for sea turtles stranded on the coast. It is the leading tourist attraction in Charente-Maritime.
For groups : Groups are welcome from 20 people, with booking at least 48 hours in advance, and one group leader goes free for every 20 paying people. The self-guided visit takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and about 2 hours with the audio guide. Adult groups can also book a themed meeting with a biologist, a 30-minute commented presentation followed by questions, on sharks, behind the scenes at the aquarium or sea turtles of the Atlantic coasts.
