The venue
A medieval fortress perched above the Dordogne valley. Built from the 12th century by the barons of Beynac to lock down the valley, the château towers over the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac from a cliff that drops sheer to the Dordogne, 150 metres below. It is listed as a historic monument.
On the plateau side, a double curtain wall protects the whole, with the crenellated square keep at its heart. Its history was shaped by Richard the Lionheart, who gave it to his loyal Mercadier, and by the Hundred Years’ War, when the Dordogne separated the lands of the King of France from those of the King of England, facing the rival Château de Castelnaud. The château has served as a setting for several films, including Luc Besson’s Joan of Arc.
For groups : Groups of 25 to 75 people are welcomed, for a free or guided visit. A coach car park is available, and the château is open from February to early January.
