The towers of the Château de Josselin above the Oust, behind a flowerbed

The venue

A feudal castle of the Dukes of Rohan on the banks of the Oust, Josselin overlooks the river from a rocky plateau. A fortress as early as the 11th century, heavily reinforced by Olivier de Clisson in the 14th century, it then passed to the Rohan family, whose residence it remains. It has been a listed historic monument since 1928.

Its courtyard façade in carved granite, built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, marks the transition from Flamboyant Gothic to Renaissance; on the river side, three tall round towers recall military architecture. Visitors can see several ground-floor rooms, furnished and decorated with works of art, including the library, as well as the gardens. The former stables house a doll museum.

For groups : Groups are welcome during the castle's opening periods, with 20 to 45 people per tour. The guided tour lasts one hour, in French, English or Spanish, and is followed by free access to the gardens; the doll and toy museum can be visited on request. Coaches cannot drive through the town centre: the nearest coach park to the entrance is on Place Saint-Nicolas.
