Trip description

A member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World club, the Gulf of Morbihan is best discovered by boat, between the Île aux Moines and the small islands scattered across it. Setting out from Carnac and its famous standing stone alignments, this group trip to southern Brittany combines megaliths, characterful towns such as Vannes and Rochefort-en-Terre, Belle-Île-en-Mer and seafood.

Day A - Arrival
Day A - Arrival

Arrival at the hotel at the end of the day, check-in to the rooms.

Welcome drink and dinner.

Carnac, 0 km
Day B - Quiberon & the Gulf of Morbihan
Day B - Quiberon & the Gulf of Morbihan

Departure for Quiberon and visit of the “La Belle Iloise” cannery, which brings back to life the great saga of tuna and sardine fishing. Then discovery of the Côte Sauvage (wild coast) from Portivy to Port-Maria. Joined to South Brittany by its isthmus, Quiberon is a unique place where sea and nature meet. To the east, the peninsula is bordered by an exceptional stretch of water: Quiberon Bay. To the west, the magnificent landscape of the wild coast is an invitation to go walking.

Lunch.

Sailing along the Rhuys peninsula, between the islands and the strong currents. A 1 hr 30 stopover on the Île-aux-Moines lets you discover the different panoramas of the gulf. Return via the beaches facing Quiberon Bay.

Return in the evening for dinner.

Quiberon, 72 km
Day C - Vannes, Carnac & La Trinité-sur-Mer
Day C - Vannes, Carnac & La Trinité-sur-Mer

A visit devoted to the town of Vannes, its ramparts built from the 13th century onwards, its wash houses and its port, with a guided tour by little train. As the many megaliths bear witness, the Vannes area has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years. The town was founded by the Romans in 56 BC, when Julius Caesar’s victorious armies conquered the whole of Armorica.

Vannes is bordered to the south by the Gulf of Morbihan, which means “little sea” in Breton. This 12,000-hectare Atlantic basin is dotted with some forty islands, some of them inhabited, such as the Île d’Arz and the Île-aux-Moines. The gulf is a unique place where land and sea blend into ever-changing landscapes.

Lunch.

The megalith trail: Carnac and its alignments and tumuli, Erdeven and its Géants de Kerzerho, menhirs weighing up to nearly 100 tonnes. La Trinité-sur-Mer, a major port for ocean-going yachts.

Return at the end of the day for dinner.

Vannes, 110 km
Day D - Belle-Île-en-Mer
Day D - Belle-Île-en-Mer

On to Belle-Île-en-Mer, 15 km south of Quiberon.

Belle-Île-en-Mer is the largest Breton island, 20 km long and 8 km wide. Belle-Île’s rich past can be seen at every turn of the path. This grand tour of the island will show you its main sites. The citadel fortified by Vauban still bears important witness to its military splendour.

Lunch on the island.

Return at the end of the day for dinner and an evening of sea shanties.

Belle-Île-en-Mer, 50 km
Day E - Auray & cider tasting
Day E - Auray & cider tasting

Auray awaits you, where the tides carry boats inland, protected by its castle. Ramps have been built on its remains, offering a panoramic view over the Saint-Goustan quarter.

Lunch.

Discovery of an age-old tradition: cider. Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of cider makers, from the origins of apple growing to distillation, including crushing, pressing and every stage of cider making. Tasting.

Dinner at the hotel at the end of the day.

Auray, 140 km
Day F - Rochefort-en-Terre & the Rivière d'Étel
Day F - Rochefort-en-Terre & the Rivière d'Étel

Amid moors and woods, Rochefort-en-Terre, set on a rocky spur, is one of the most beautiful villages in France. Everywhere, geraniums and ivy set off the stone with their colourful flowers. Here, every detail is cared for. Cobbled lanes, stylish shop signs: the town seems like a little gem nestled in the heart of the Morbihan. Look up at the corbelled houses on the charming Place du Puits and Rue Saint-Michel, and enjoy the place. In summer, the old town is entirely pedestrianised. A real delight… Lunch at the hotel.

Cruise on the Rivière d’Étel, famous for its strong current and its panorama of islets shaped by wind and tides. A remarkable site. Saint-Cado, its calvary and its 12th-century chapel: a real picture postcard.

Return at the end of the day for dinner and a Kenavo (Breton farewell) evening.
