The venue
An immersive journey through the wine civilisations of the world. Opened in 2016 in Bordeaux, in the Bacalan district on the banks of the Garonne, the Cité du Vin is a cultural venue designed halfway between a museum and a theme park. It is run by the Foundation for the Culture and Civilisations of Wine.
Its rounded building, designed by the XTU agency, evokes both wine swirling in a glass and the eddies of the river. The permanent exhibition is explored with a multimedia visit companion, and temporary exhibitions have been held since 2017. On the 8th floor, the belvedere offers a view over the city and the Port of the Moon from 35 metres up; a tasting is offered there.
For groups : The Cité du Vin welcomes groups from 20 people for the permanent exhibition, the temporary exhibitions and tasting workshops. Groups are met on arrival and accompanied for fifteen minutes up to the permanent exhibition, with an introduction in French, English or Spanish; the visit itself is available in eight languages. Themed tours lasting 1 hour 15 are offered for groups.
