The venue
The highest dune in Europe, with a panoramic view over the Arcachon basin. Located at the southern entrance to the basin, in the commune of La Teste-de-Buch, the Dune du Pilat stood 103.6 metres high in 2023. It stretches about 2.9 km from north to south and borders the Landes de Gascogne forest.
Its formation is linked to the Banc d’Arguin sandbank opposite: at low tide, the west wind lifts sand from the exposed bank and deposits it on the dune. This constantly changing landscape has been a protected site since 1943, a protection extended in 1994 to the neighbouring forest. For a group, it is an outdoor outing between ocean, sand and forest.
