The venue
A cavern nicknamed the « crystal cathedral », where a descent by nacelle is possible. The Gouffre de Proumeyssac opens in Audrix, in the Périgord Noir. Explored in 1907 by Gabriel Galou, it consists mainly of one large chamber and reaches a depth of 42 metres.
Visitors discover stalactites, stalagmites and monoliths, as well as triangular crystals, formations that are rare in France. The chasm also has a petrifying spring which, in one year, coats simple pottery with a shiny layer of limestone. In the 18th century, a legend made this opening, from which vapour escaped, the devil’s home.
For groups : Adult groups of 20 or more book their guided tour, which lasts 45 minutes, and the driver and one group leader enter free of charge. One package combines the visit, a meal at the on-site restaurant, with a choice of six Périgord menus, and an entertainment; private tours are also arranged on quotation. A large car park allows coaches to manoeuvre easily.
