The venue
A historic train climbing to the summit of La Rhune, with views over the Basque Country. Opened in 1924, this rack railway, one of the few still operating in France, departs from the Col de Saint-Ignace, between Ascain and Sare, about ten kilometres from Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Over 4.2 km of metre-gauge track, it climbs from 169 to 905 metres above sea level, to a station close to the summit, which lies on the French-Spanish border. The electric trains, designed in 1924 and fully restored, run during the tourist season. It is an outing that combines railway heritage and mountain scenery.
For groups : Adult groups qualify for a group rate from 20 people, with free travel for one escort and the driver; the train runs from late March to early November, and in July and August the group rate only applies to the first two morning departures. About 2 h 30 should be allowed in total, on the « voyage classique » with free time at the summit, or the « voyage guidé », with a guide during the climb followed by a theme at the summit, such as the history of the train and the massif or Basque challenges. The site has a car park for coaches.
