The venue
A zoological park where animals live in semi-freedom, set within a botanical estate. Located in Le Guerno, in the Morbihan, it opened in 1965 around a château built in 1848. Its owners, Paul and Hélène Jourde, were inspired by the semi-free parks they had discovered on a trip to India. The estate was bequeathed to the Fondation de France in 1988.
Covering 45 hectares, the park is home to around 1,500 animals of 195 species and takes part in the conservation of some forty endangered species. The areas follow themes such as the African plain or the Indian valley. On the botanical side, a weeping oriental plane tree about 300 years old stands out, listed as a “Remarkable Tree of France”.
For groups : The park welcomes groups, both adults and children, from 20 people. Adult groups visit on their own or with a guide from the École de la Nature: the discovery tour lasts one hour, and the two-hour privilege tour opens areas closed to the public, such as the giraffe house, and includes a feeding session. A route adapted to seniors is available on request. The 150-seat group restaurant with table service welcomes groups of 20 or more for lunch, and the day can be combined with a guided tour of Rochefort-en-Terre or of the salt marshes.
