The venue
Ramparts largely remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries, offering a panoramic view over the bay. Begun in the 12th century, the walls of Saint-Malo were strengthened in Vauban’s time by the engineer Siméon Garangeau, who replaced three quarters of them between 1708 and 1742.
Pierced by nine gates, the walls stretch for 1,754 metres and reach up to 16 metres high in places. The walk along the ramparts passes bastions such as Saint-Louis, Saint-Philippe and La Hollande, as well as remains of the medieval walls, including the 15th-century Grand’Porte. The route overlooks both the walled town and the sea.
For groups : The Saint-Malo tourist office helps organise group stays and publishes a brochure of guided tours reserved for groups. Coaches drop off passengers on the Esplanade Saint-Vincent, opposite the tourist office, or at the Grand'Porte, on Quai Saint-Louis. They then park all year round at the car park on Rue Paul Féval, behind the racecourse, from where drivers can reach Intra-Muros by bus.
