The venue
The Basque home of the author of Cyrano de Bergerac, surrounded by formal French gardens. Edmond Rostand had it built from 1903 to 1906 in Cambo-les-Bains, and wrote Chantecler there. Owned by the town since 1961, the villa now houses the Edmond Rostand Museum.
Set apart from the town, the estate lies within a 15-hectare park, with a French formal garden to the east and an English garden to the west. Its name comes from the Arraga stream, which Rostand changed to “Arnaga” for its sound; the word means “place of stone” in Basque. The visit introduces the writer in the setting where he lived and worked, in the heart of the Basque Country.
For groups : The villa welcomes adult groups all year round, from 15 people, in the morning only, from Tuesday to Sunday, by reservation. The guided tour, in French, English or Spanish, lasts 35 minutes on the ground floor, after which guides answer questions upstairs, before a self-guided visit of the gardens; allow about 1 hour 30 minutes on site. Admission is free from the thirtieth person and for the coach driver.
