The venue
One of the most visited zoos in France, La Palmyre Zoo is home to more than 1,500 animals over 18 hectares. Founded in 1966 by Claude Caillé and still owned by his family, it lies within the seaside resort of La Palmyre, in Charente-Maritime, on the edge of the Coubre state forest.
Laid out as a landscaped garden, the park is explored along a trail of more than 4 kilometres, meeting some 115 species, including gorillas and other great apes. The zoo presents California sea lion shows, as well as parrot and cockatoo shows. A member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, it takes part in breeding programmes for endangered species.
For groups : Groups, such as associations or clubs, benefit from a dedicated rate from 25 people, by order form. The visit takes about 4 hours; coaches park free of charge in car park P2. The zoo has two places to eat, and picnics are allowed on the benches along the paths and on the stands of the sea lion and parrot shows; the park is accessible to people with reduced mobility, despite some steep slopes.
