Trip description
The Train Jaune, the emblematic mountain line of the Catalan Pyrenees, ranks among the most beautiful railway journeys in France. This group trip from Mont-Louis pairs it with the Núria rack railway in Spanish Catalonia, the fortified town of Villefranche-de-Conflent and the Conflent landscapes overlooked by the Canigou.
Themed days of the tour
Trip can be tailored to your wishes and budget
Departure for the Conflent aboard the little yellow tourist train (Train Jaune), crossing numerous bridges, tunnels and engineering works through the unspoilt, preserved nature of the Pyrenees, to Villefranche-de-Conflent, the pink marble town listed among the hundred most beautiful villages in France, with its local crafts.
Visit of Fort Libéria and a barbecue lunch on site. Free time in Villefranche and visit of a garnet workshop in Prades, overlooked by the Canigou, the sacred mountain of the Catalans.
In the evening, dinner with flambéed baked Alaska. Bingo evening with many prizes and a ham.
Departure for Núria, a renowned sanctuary nestled in the heart of one of the highest valleys of the eastern Pyrenees. Drive through the Ripollès and ascent from Ribes de Freser by the little rack railway. Visit of the sanctuary, venerated for its Virgin (with the pot into which you put your head to ensure the fertility you wish for, and the bell you ring to cure headaches!). Access to the exhibitions on nature, the rack railway, the painter Colli Barbolet and the church of Núria. Option to take the cable car (weather permitting).
Lunch on site. Free time on site and return.
In the evening, video screening about the Catalan Pyrenees.
Departure for the Aude valley through the Défilé de Pierre-Lys and the “Trou du Curé” to Axat. Then the viaducts tour aboard the Train Rouge du Pays Cathare et du Fenouillèdes to Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet.
Lunch, then on to the village of Cucugnan and the Priest’s Sermon at the Théâtre Achille Mir.
Tasting and sale at a winegrower’s. Return via the Têt valley.
Questions and answers evening.
In the morning, passing through the Spanish enclave of Llivia and its cathedral, visit of Puigcerdà, a Spanish border town, with its shops and shopping streets. Shopping.
On the way back, tasting and sale of cured meats at the ham-drying room of a local master craftsman who holds the Guinness World Record for making the longest sausage in the world.
Lunch at the hotel, with sausage in brioche with Banyuls sauce and shoulder of lamb with poivrade sauce.
In the afternoon, visit of the “Thémis” solar power plant via the Chaos de Targasonne, then the Dorres thermal baths, with a breathtaking view over the Cerdagne plateau. Free time in Font-Romeu.
Dinner with a giant fideuà, a large farewell cake and a glass of “CAVA”.
