Trip description
Coastal paths facing the ocean, the Iraty Forest, mountain passes and villages: the Basque Country offers remarkably varied walking terrain on both sides of the border. Setting out from La Bastide-Clairence, this group walking trip leads from Jaizkibel, in Spain, to the villages of Ainhoa and Espelette.

JAIZKIBEL: here the Pyrenees meet the ocean. A strategic position through the centuries, this last sandstone rampart, its foot battered by storms, overlooks the Bay of Txingudi and the town of Hondarribia. Fishermen, shepherds and pilgrims on the Way of St James all crossed this rugged moorland on the Atlantic coast. The path skims the waves and continues across green moorland with superb flora and fauna.

Elevation gain: 500 m
Iraty and its legendary beech forest, the largest in Europe. Set deep inland, this is the highest route of the week, reaching an altitude of 1,500 metres. High mountains and a living pastoral area, the Iraty massif takes us into Soule, the most mountainous province of the Basque Country, from Lower Navarre and its capital Donibane Garazi (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in French).

Espelette market in the morning, then a hike across the Espelette pepper AOC area. After a relaxing morning of tasting and shopping, we will set off from Espelette on a hike towards Ainhoa, via the hermitage of the Chapelle de l’Aubépine on the Errebi mountain.
This summit closes off the Sare basin to the east, and from the chapel it offers a striking open view over the villages of Ainhoa and Espelette. Pastoralism is still very much alive here, and it is not unusual to come across flocks of sheep and pottoks (Basque ponies) brightening up the bracken around the old farm barns.

Hike from Espelette to Ainhoa over the mountain

Duration: 5 hrs 30
This hike takes you along the Sare caves and back in time through Basque mythology. A land of witches with a tragic fate, the Xareta (a natural cirque grouping the villages of Sare, Ainhoa, Zugarramurdi and Urdazubi) is full of megalithic sites and other traces of the origins of human culture.
